Message du directeur de la recherche :

L’équipe de recherche de la Division de la chirurgie orthopédique englobe plusieurs unités de pratique clinique, comprenant des spécialistes de l’oncologie orthopédique, de la reconstruction chez l’adulte, des membres supérieurs, de la préservation des articulations, de la traumatologie, du pied et de la cheville et de la colonne vertébrale. Notre excellente collaboration avec le Centre hospitalier pour enfants de l’est de l’Ontario, le Laboratoire de biomécanique de l’Université d’Ottawa, le Département de biochimie, de microbiologie et d’immunologie de la Faculté de médecine et le Département de génie mécanique de l’Université Carleton continue d’être le moteur d’une recherche de qualité. La plupart de nos travaux ont été appuyés par l’industrie, des subventions ayant fait l’objet d’une évaluation par des pairs et L’Hôpital d’Ottawa. Nous procédons à de nombreux essais cliniques, qu’ils soient initiés par le chercheur principal local ou qu’ils se déroulent dans le cadre d’études internationales multicentriques.

Associés de Recherche

Daniel Benoit, PhD – Professor agrégé

Professeur agrégé à l’École des sciences de la réadaptation, Daniel Benoit a obtenu son baccalauréat en sciences de l’activité physique de l’Université d’Ottawa et sa maîtrise en biodynamique humaine (biomécanique) de l’Université McMaster. Il a poursuivi sa carrière en Europe à titre de directeur d’un laboratoire de biomécanique clinique à Pérouse, en Italie. Pendant son séjour là-bas, il a aussi mené des recherches in vivo sur la fatigue des ligaments croisés antérieurs et la sollicitation des articulations du genou. Daniel Benoit s’est ensuite installé à Stockholm, en Suède, où il a obtenu un doctorat en médecine sportive de l’Institut Karolinska pour ses études sur le contrôle neuromusculaire de l’articulation du genou, la mesure in vivo de l’articulation fémoro-tibiale et la quantification des artéfacts liés au mouvement de la peau durant l’analyse des mouvements. Il a ensuite été stagiaire postdoctoral au Center for Biomedical Engineering Research à l’Université du Delaware, où il a participé à des recherches financées par les Instituts nationaux de la santé (NIH) sur la prévision des forces musculaires et articulaires chez des patients ayant une lésion des ligaments croisés antérieurs, ainsi qu’à un projet reposant sur l’intégration de la robotique, de l’électrostimulation fonctionnelle et de la modélisation biomécanique pour améliorer la démarche des victimes d’AVC. En plus de poursuivre ses travaux de recherches entrepris antérieurement, à l’Université d’Ottawa Daniel Benoit se penche sur la compréhension du rôle des muscles dans la stabilité dynamique des articulations et comment elle est affectée par les troubles neurologiques et musculosquelettiques. Il souhaite ainsi prévenir les blessures et améliorer la réadaptation.

Isabelle Catelas, PhD – Médecine cellulaire et moléculaire

Isabelle Catelas, qui possède un diplôme d’ingénieur (UTC, France), une maîtrise ès sciences appliquées (Polytechnique, Montréal) et un doctorat (Université McGill), est professeure agrégée et titulaire de la chaire de recherche du Canada au Département de génie mécanique de l’Université d’Ottawa, avec nominations conjointes au Département de chirurgie et au Département de biochimie, de microbiologie et d’immunologie de la Faculté de médecine. Elle s’est jointe à l’Université d’Ottawa en 2008 après avoir travaillé dans l’industrie de la biotechnologie pendant quelques années. Ses recherches actuelles portent sur les mécanismes conduisant à une défaillance des prothèses de la hanche et sur le développement de nouveaux substituts osseux. Depuis son arrivée à l’Université d’Ottawa, Isabelle Catelas a collaboré étroitement avec la Division de chirurgie orthopédique de L’Hôpital d’Ottawa, ce qui a permis de générer une collection de plus en plus importante d’échantillons cliniques provenant de patients ayant une chirurgie d’appoint d’une prothèse de la hanche.

Daniel Coutu, PhD – Chaire de recherche, chirurgie orthopédique régénérative, L‘Hôpital d’Ottawa, professeur adjoint/scientifique, programme de médecine régénérative, IHRO

Dr. Coutu a obtenu son doctorat en médecine expérimentale de l’Université McGill.  La recherche du Dr. Coutu à l’IHRO et à l’Université d’Ottawa, est d’étudier la biologie des cellules souches squelettiques dans le but d’offrir de nouvelles thérapies aux patients souffrant d’affections débilitantes ayant des besoins cliniques qui n’ont pas été rencontrés.  La recherche dans le laboratoire du Dr. Coutu explore quatre axes principaux:  1)  étudier la biologie fondamentale des cellules souches squelettiques, 2) améliorer la régénération tissulaire et réparer les cellules souches squellettiques, 3) développement technologique – techniques d’imagerie quantitative et 4) étudier les interactions entre cellules squelettiques et cellules sanguines/immunitaires de la moelle osseuse.

Greg O. Cron, PhD – Physicien IRM

Greg O. Cron est physicien en IRM au Département d’imagerie médicale de L’Hôpital d’Ottawa. Il gère aussi le Centre d’imagerie préclinique de l’Université d’Ottawa. Il est affilié à l’Institut de recherche de L’Hôpital d’Ottawa, à l’Université d’Ottawa, à l’Université Carleton et à l’Ottawa Medical Physics Institute. Ses champs d’intérêt liés à la recherche musculosquelettique sont la mesure des perfusions autour des prothèses de la hanche, la mesure des perfusions dans les tumeurs musculosquelettiques, la différenciation entre lipome et liposarcome, et les IRM haute résolution à intensité élevée des tissus musculosquelettiques chez l’humain et l’animal.

Ryan Foster, MD FRCPC – Radiologiste musculosquelettique

Le Dr Ryan Foster est radiologiste musculosquelettique au Service de radiologie de L’Hôpital d’Ottawa et professeur adjoint à l’Université d’Ottawa. Il a fait sa spécialité à l’Hospital for Special Surgery de New York. Ses champs d’intérêt clinique et de recherche sont les blessures sportives, l’arthrose et la neuropathie périphérique. Il a rédigé des articles évalués par des pairs sur des interventions musculosquelettiques guidées par imagerie et sur la sécurité du gadolinium. Le Dr Foster a donné des conférences ici et à l’étranger sur des sujets comme le contrôle de la qualité en radiologie, les pathologies subtiles des os pelviens et le syndrome de Purinen. Il a reçu un certificat de mérite de l’ARRS grâce à ses efforts de collaboration dans le cadre de l’exposition électronique intitulée « Extraspinal Causes of Sciatica ».

Hanspeter Frei, PhD – Physicien

Hanspeter Frei est professeur agrégé de génie mécanique et aérospatial à l’Université Carleton. Ses travaux de recherche portent sur la biomécanique de la hanche et de la colonne vertébrale. Il s’intéresse particulièrement au pathomécanisme de l’arthrose de la hanche, la prévision, la prévention et la réparation des fractures ostéoporotiques de la hanche et la chirurgie de fusion vertébrale. Ses travaux de recherche expérimentale et numérique servent à mieux comprendre les pathomécanismes afin de mettre au point de nouveaux traitements. De plus, il s’intéresse aux technologies de fabrication additive en vue de mettre au point des implants vertébraux et des prothèses de la hanche adaptés à chaque patient.

Mario Lamontagne, PhD – Vice-doyen, recherche

Mario Lamontagne a obtenu son doctorat en génie biomédical de l’École polytechnique de l’Université de Montréal. Il est actuellement professeur en biomécanique à l’École des sciences de l’activité physique de l’Université d’Ottawa et enseigne aussi au Département de génie mécanique (nomination conjointe). Les travaux de Mario Lamontagne portent sur les sciences biomédicales et la biomécanique, en particulier la modélisation numérique et musculosquelettique des articulations humaines, la conception et la technologie d’adaptation des prothèses et des orthèses, la prévention des blessures et l’adaptation neuromusculaire. Ses principaux programmes de recherche sont axés sur la mécanique de l’articulation saine ou malade de la hanche et du genou chez les humains, ainsi que sur l’évaluation biomécanique de la mobilité des patients ayant eu une arthroplastie totale de la hanche et du genou. Ses intérêts de recherche portent notamment sur les sciences biomédicales, la biomécanique, la modélisation numérique et musculosquelettique, la prévention des blessures, la conception de technologies assistées (prothèses et orthèses) et l’adaptation neuromusculaire. Son programme de recherche actuel, financé par le Conseil de recherches en sciences naturelles et en génie du Canada (CRSNG), consiste à élaborer un modèle numérique et musculosquelettique de l’articulation de la hanche pour les patients atteints d’une malformation fémoro-acétabulaire.

Gerd Melkus, PhD – Physicien IRM

Gerd Melkus, Ph.D., est professeur adjoint au Département de radiologie avec nomination conjointe à la Division de chirurgie orthopédique de l’Université d’Ottawa. Il a obtenu en 2010 un doctorat en physique, avec spécialité en imagerie médicale, de l’Université de Würzburg, en Allemagne. Avant de s’installer à Ottawa, il a passé trois ans comme stagiaire postdoctoral au sein du groupe de recherche en imagerie quantitative musculosquelettique et a été directeur du laboratoire d’IRM préclinique 7 Tesla de l’Université de Californie à San Francisco. Il s’est joint au Département d’imagerie médicale de L’Hôpital d’Ottawa en juillet 2013. Ses intérêts de recherche portent notamment sur les développements techniques et les applications des nouvelles méthodes d’imagerie par résonance magnétique et de spectroscopie ainsi que sur les algorithmes de traitement des données d’imagerie de pointe. Son travail est axé sur les maladies musculosquelettiques et, surtout, sur la caractérisation quantitative non invasive du cartilage, du tendon et des tissus musculaires.

Stéphane Poitras, PT PhD – Chef scientifique de l’amélioration de la qualité des soins de santé

Stéphane Poitras a obtenu son baccalauréat en physiothérapie de l’Université d’Ottawa en 1995. Il a obtenu une maîtrise en sciences cliniques de l’Université de Sherbrooke en 1998 et un doctorat en santé publique (option gestion des organisations de santé) de l’Université de Montréal en 2005. Il a été stagiaire postdoctoral en épidémiologie et en biostatistique à l’Université McGill de 2005 à 2007. Il est professeur à l’Université d’Ottawa depuis mai 2007. Ses intérêts de recherche portent sur l’efficacité et l’efficience de la gestion des problèmes musculosquelettiques. Il s’intéresse aussi à la recherche sur les services de santé en lien avec la gestion de ces problèmes de santé.

Kawan Rakhra, MD FRCPC – Radiologiste musculosquelettique

Le Dr Kawan Rakhra est chef de l’équipe spécialisée en imagerie musculosquelettique du Département d’imagerie médicale de L’Hôpital d’Ottawa et professeur agrégé au Département de radiologie de l’Université d’Ottawa, avec nomination conjointe à la Division de chirurgie orthopédique. Ses champs d’intérêt clinique et ses travaux de recherche portent sur l’IRM des pathologies de la hanche, incluant le conflit fémoro-acétabulaire (CFA), les techniques d’IRM de pointe du cartilage et la médecine sportive.

Marcos Sampaio, MD FRCPC – Radiologiste musculosquelettique

Originaire du Brésil, le Dr Marcos Loreto Sampaio est radiologiste musculosquelettique à L’Hôpital d’Ottawa et professeur adjoint de l’Université d’Ottawa depuis son arrivée au Canada en 2009. Il a fait ses études en génie électronique, en médecine et en radiologie à l’Université de São Paulo, au Brésil. Il a obtenu une bourse de recherche en musculosquelettique à l’Hospital for Joint Diseases (Université de New York). Le Dr Sampaio s’intéresse particulièrement à la médecine sportive, à la rhumatologie, à l’imagerie de la moelle et à l’utilisation de l’échographie et de l’imagerie par résonance magnétique (IRM) en imagerie musculosquelettique. Il s’intéresse aussi à l’enseignement médical et a reçu au cours des dernières années le titre de meilleur professeur clinicien décerné par les étudiants de premier cycle, les résidents et les boursiers. À l’heure actuelle, il est directeur de stage postdoctoral en recherche musculosquelettique et participe à divers projets de recherche dans son département.

Guy Trudel, MD MSC FRCPC – Professor de médecine, chirurgie et biochimie et directeur du laboratoire de recherche sur les os et les articulations

Originaire de Québec, le Dr Guy Trudel a terminé ses études en médecine à l’Université Laval en 1988. Il a été certifié associé du Collège royal des médecins et chirurgiens du Canada (FRCPC) en médecine physique et en réadaptation en 1993 à l’Université Dalhousie. Il a obtenu une maîtrise en anatomie et en neurobiologie à l’Université Dalhousie à titre de boursier de la Fondation Rich Hansen. En 1995, il s’est installé à Ottawa pour établir sa pratique clinique et son programme de recherche. Son unité d’enseignement de soins tertiaires en réadaptation offre des soins aux personnes ayant eu un polytraumatisme ou ayant des complications médicales et chirurgicales graves ou complexes. À titre de directeur du Laboratoire de recherche sur les os et les articulations, il a mené, au cours des 20 dernières années, des recherches cliniques et en laboratoire dans trois domaines liés aux complications musculosquelettiques de l’immobilité : les contractures articulaires, les tendinopathies et l’accumulation de graisse dans la moelle osseuse. Durant cette période, son équipe a publié plus de 60 rapports de recherche originaux. Le Dr Trudel a reçu plus de 6 M$ à titre de chercheur principal, principalement des Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada (IRSC), ainsi que 23 M$ dans le cadre de recherches conjointes.

Leanne Ward, MD FRCPC – Collaboratrice en endocrinologie

La Dre Leanne Ward est directrice des programmes clinique et de recherche sur la santé des os chez les enfants au Centre hospitalier pour enfants de l’est de l’Ontario et professeure agrégée à la Division de l’endocrinologie et du métabolisme du Département de pédiatrie. Ses travaux de recherche portent sur les mécanismes et le traitement des lésions osseuses et musculaires secondaires à une maladie systémique chronique, en particulier l’ostéoporose causée par un cancer infantile, à la prise de glucocorticoïdes, à une maladie inflammatoire et à une mobilité réduite. Elle est chercheuse principale du programme de recherche STOPP (STeroid-induced Osteoporosis in the Pediatric Population), une initiative pancanadienne financée par les IRSC à laquelle participent 12 centres de soins tertiaires pédiatriques. Elle a publié énormément d’articles sur les mécanismes et l’épidémiologie de la morbidité osseuse chez les enfants. La Dre Ward participe activement à des essais de médicaments pour les enfants atteints de troubles osseux, dont le bisphosphonate et le dénosumab pour l’ostéoporose primaire et secondaire et l’anticorps anti-FGF-23 pour le traitement du rachitisme hypophosphatémique. La Dre Ward s’intéresse particulièrement à l’interférence entre les muscles et les os et à l’effet des thérapies osseuses sur les maladies sous-jacentes, y compris les troubles qui affectent la santé musculaire.
